Meet your School Counselor
Hello! I am Ms. Carlton - the school counselor for high school students at SWA.
I am originally from Lenoir, a small town in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains. Growing up in a rural town with a large family, I learned to value the presence of community engagement in schools. I graduated from Wake Forest University in May of 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a focus in Education and Sociology. Pursuing college and attending Wake Forest University as a Magnolia Scholar for first-generation college students, I experienced the true power of having mentors, academic support, and guidance in the education process. My passion for education and desire to help others pursue their goals to overcome barriers quickly led me to lock-in my decision to become a school counselor which led me to pursue a Master's in Education at UNC-Chapel Hill . For fun, I enjoy cooking, going to church, learning to kayak, exercising, yoga, biking, hiking NC waterfalls, watching Big Brother, and finding good places to eat! |
Ms. Carlton's beliefs:
- Preparing students to pursue some sort of post-secondary education or training is an essential part of the high school process.
- Students should exit high school equipped with the knowledge to pursue and achieve their lifelong goals.
- Students should have access to a genuine school counselor who gives them unconditional positive regard and empathy.
- School counselors are leaders, advocates, and collaborators who catalyze systemic change.
- School counselors work to close achievement and opportunity gaps through establishing a comprehensive counseling program which strives for equity over equality.
- School counselors maintain confidentiality with all students whenever possible.
- Students' beliefs about their intelligence, efforts, and struggles impact the choices they make about learning.
- Success can be developed.
